An important part of Oakhurst Baptist Church’s identity is the balance of outward service with the inward spiritual journey. During the late 1960s and 70s, the process of writing the Covenant examined outward and inward journeys and the (at that time) radical idea of "meditation."
A Spirituality Mission Group began in 1993, which has brought attentiveness to spiritual formation within the Baptist context and involved leadership in worship, annual silent retreats, the creation of a Rule of Life and numerous publications and interest in the practice of spiritual direction.
In 2001, Oakhurst became a part of the Youth Ministry and Spirituality Project (YMSP) YMSP has led to: deepening spiritual growth in those adults who work with the youth; deepening faith of the youth; Watershed and more youth being baptized; youth sharing their testimonies and claiming their own faith; and pilgrimages to Taizé and the labyrinth at Chartres. These experiences have resulted in regular Taizé services, integration of Taizé music in worship and experiencing God through meditative walking of labyrinths.
Some members also have been trained or are being trained as spiritual directors, while others are under the guidance of spiritual directors. Spiritual growth at OBC has consistently reflected emphases on incarnational theology—intimacy with God as intimacy with self and intimacy with self as intimacy with God; knowledge of God leads to knowledge of self and knowledge of self leads to knowledge of God.
