On August 12, the Spiritual Growth Mission Group of Oakhurst Baptist Church is sponsoring a day-long Introduction to Centering Prayer workshop at the church. The workshop will be followed by a series of six shorter continuing sessions.
Centering Prayer is a receptive method of silent prayer that prepares us to receive the gift of contemplative prayer, in which we experience God’s presence within us, closer than breathing, closer than thinking. This method of prayer is a relationship with God, and a discipline to foster that relationship. Centering Prayer is not meant to replace other kinds of prayer. Rather, it adds depth of meaning to all prayer. Centering Prayer emphasizes prayer as a personal relationship with God, and as a movement beyond conversation with Christ to communion with Christ.
Centering Prayer belongs to the ancient tradition of contemplative prayer within Christianity. While this tradition has often been forgotten in modern Western churches, it is undergoing a dynamic revival today. In a time of increased social and political polarization and activism, Centering Prayer offers a means of becoming grounded in Christ’s presence while pursuing a life of active discipleship. The workshop will be presented from within this Christian tradition; but anyone of any belief or background is welcome. The workshop will be led by Roberta White, an experienced presenter affiliated with Contemplative Outreach.
The Centering Prayer Introductory Workshop familiarizes participants with the method of Centering Prayer and its conceptual background, and offers two opportunities to actually experience the prayer. The workshop consists of four presentations.
1. Prayer as Relationship
2. The Method of Centering Prayer
3. Thoughts and the Use of the Sacred Word
4. Deepening our Relationship with God
