COVENANT COMMITTEE
A Covenant Committee seeks to help the church remain aware of its
commitment to the principles set forth in the covenant, and the committee seeks to provide
opportunities for supportive relations through which a covenant community may be realized.
The covenant came into being, according to Pastor Emeritus John Nichol, out of a felt
need for our congregation to have a clearer sense of its identity and theological
priorities. Knowing who we are called to be and to become is a prerequisite to our
faithfulness in discipleship, just as it was for Jesus Christ.
What are the practical steps that the Covenant Committee takes to accomplish these
purposes?
 | planning and executing the annual Covenant Sunday services and activities; |
 | keeping the covenant and its meaning before the church, using articles, symbols, study
and discussion periods, etc.; |
 | leading in the formation of groups that can provide support for living in a covenant
community: |
 | calling attention to inconsistencies between the covenant principles and our church
structure and practice; and |
 | working with other committees in areas pertaining to the covenant. |
As Nancy Hastings Sehested, a former associate pastor, wrote:
Our covenant is still building of us a people, positioning us to
hear God's word for our lives. We continue to be on God's road of shalom, walking toward a
vision of wholeness for the whole creation.
