The facilities of Oakhurst Baptist Church consist of two buildings at 222
East Lake Drive in Decatur, a worship center and a four story educational building. These
buildings provide for church offices, an excellent theological library, worship space, the
Oakhurst Recovery Program, a Spiritual Growth Center, a fellowship hall, as well as
classrooms and assembly areas. An Oakhurst member, Gary Gunderson, recently wrote,
"Oakhurst is like the innkeeper in the Biblical story of the Good Samaritan with a
constantly repeating tale of people who come here to find a safe space amid a dangerous
bruising journey. Prisoners and refugees, addicts and visionaries, seekers resting as
their vision matures, elders still prophesying long past the time their cohorts were
satisfied with remembering. Some come to Oakhurst as a last place to serve. Others come as
one of the first places to test their servant skills. Others simply grow faithfully old
here."
And now a new four story
educational building is complete. Pastor Lanny
Peters says this addresses a justice issue we have ignored as long as we can - we
finally have a building accessible to all through ramps, an elevator, and adequate
restrooms.
"We are not just replacing an aging building," the pastor said, "we are
moving to a new level of ministry. We have made a deeper commitment to our drug and
alcohol recovery program. Now we are able to provide space for that program which is
optimal. Our Spirituality Center has been enhanced with the
addition of a small chapel. And we have adequate room where we can gather for meals
and fellowship.
