The World Is About to Turn!
“My soul cries out with a joyful shout
That the God of my heart is great
And my spirit sings of the Wondrous things
That you bring to the ones who wait
You fixed your sight on your servant’s plight
And my weakness you did not spurn
So from east to west shall my name be blest
Could the world be about to turn?”
And so begins the “Canticle of the Turning,” based on the words of Mary’s song in Luke, commonly referred to as “The Magnificat.”
Mary, a marginalized Jewish peasant woman living under Roman rule, yearns for God’s justice to break through into this world and turn things upside down, making the last first and the first last. She senses that the baby she carries might somehow, mysteriously, bring about this new upside-down world.
